The Minority in Parliament has commended the government on reliefs given to residents of Appiatse two years down the line.
On Thursday May 2, 2024, the government commissioned 124 homes as part of the Appiatse reconstruction project.
This initiative comes in response to the devastating event of January 2022 which saw the community ravaged and claimed the lives of 16 residents following an explosion.
But speaking to Starr News, the Ranking Member of Parliament’s Works and Housing Committee, Vincent Oppong Asamoah expressed pessimism over fair distribution.
“We have not visited the site because the entire project was not under the Ministry of Works and Housing. We have not been involved, but looking at the pictures I think they have done a good job. My only worry is if those who were affected, the distribution is going to be fair. So far as I am concerned, NPP will not do anything that will not have political colorization. They will definitely do their politics with this.
“I will applaud them if they are fair in their distribution because we know most of the funding was not given by government. Lots of private individuals supported. So I wish that the donors will also be involved in the distribution. If they leave it to the government alone, at the end of the day we will have so many issues. I am happy that even though we have lost some lives, the relief…the structure that has been put up is an upgrade of what used to be there. I am only praying that they are fair in the distribution. Those who were seriously affected will be considered.”
