A man has been arrested in New Juaben South in the Eastern Region for attempting to register twice in the current voter registration exercise.
The suspect had previously registered during the September 2023 registration period but attempted to re-register at registration center at the Electoral Commission (EC) office on Wednesday May 8, 2024.
The system flagged the suspect’s attempt, leading to his immediate arrest.
He admitted to police that he was seeking a replacement for his lost voter ID card.
The man remains in police custody and is assisting with investigations.
Kofi Asante Owusu, the New Juaben South Municipal Director of the Electoral Commission, urged the public to refrain from any attempted double registration and registration of minors, as the biometric system would detect such illegality.
Owusu noted that the EC will provide opportunities for lost voter ID card replacements and advised people not to attempt re-registering.
The voter registration exercise in New Juaben South has been temporarily halted due to network issues again.
The disruption occurred around 10:30 a.m. after registering about 59 applicants in the morning.
As off 1:00pm the network had not been restored.
Many of the affected new applicants are students.
A similar challenge was experienced at the start of the exercise on Tuesday, when only about 90 applicants were registered.
