The Member of Parliament for Korle Klottey, Dr. Zanetor Agyeman Rawlings has revealed that he never had an ambition to become a Legislator.

During an interview with Bola Ray on Starr Chat on Starr FM, she shared that her humanitarian efforts following the June 3 flood and fire disaster at the Kwame Nkrumah Circle in Accra—which claimed numerous lives—led her to her current role.

“It was actually the June 3 incident that got me involved … it was a very interesting situation because this was not my original intention. I actually followed through with the June 3 disaster because at the time I was partnering with TV3 and we were giving relief items to the victims of that disaster. I remember at one point during the donation, I thought we needed to go a bit deeper.”

She added, “So in one community, at Odawna, at the time I did not realize that I was actually going to end up becoming the Member of Parliament for that area. As we were giving things out, I looked around and thought, my goodness, there was so much debris and dirt in the area. It seemed a bit strange to be giving relief items without addressing the environmental and sanitation issues. All I could see was the potential for a disease outbreak while distributing the relief items.”

Dr. Agyeman Rawlings continued, “So I got off the truck and did a tour of the area with some of the opinion leaders. I asked them why the place was so filthy, and they explained that when they did clean up, they weren’t getting the support needed to clear the waste from the area. This created a feeling of ‘why bother,’ which, from a distance, could be interpreted as people being unwilling to try. However, when you get to know people better and understand their situation with an open mind, you realize why they aren’t doing more than you think they should. This led to a huge clean-up effort, and the rest is history. It wasn’t my intention to run for Member of Parliament when I started doing this. It was just a recognition of the need for a clean environment because there is a link between the environment and health.”
