Dominic Nitiwul, Ghana’s Minister of Defense, has called on the Ghana Armed Forces to uphold absolute political neutrality prior to, during, and beyond the elections scheduled for December 2024.

He emphasized that their principal duty is to safeguard the integrity of the country.

Speaking on Monday, July 1, at the Republic Day lecture sponsored by the Ghana Armed Forces Command and Staff College, Nitiwul underlined the military’s vital role in defending democracy and cautioned against any partisan engagement.

“The military is the last bastion of our country’s hope,” declared Nitiwul.

In the lecture, which included notable speakers like Prof. Kwasi Aning and Mr. Francis Poku, the former national security minister, emphasized the critical role that military impartiality plays in ensuring national security and stability.

Other distinguished guests, like Madam Josephine Nkrumah, echoed the Minister’s sentiment, emphasizing the potential consequences if the armed forces were to lose public trust by aligning with a political party.

Such a breach, he warned, could undermine the very foundation of democracy.
