The National Labour Commission has described the strike action by the Civil and Local Government Staff Association of Ghana (CLOGSAG) as contemptuous.

The Association boycotted a scheduled meeting with the National Labour Commission, the Finance Ministry, and the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission on Wednesday over their strike, which left many people stranded at various government agencies.

The government failed to implement a proposed new salary structure approved by the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission, despite a memorandum of understanding being reached one and a half years ago.

However, the Executive Secretary of the National Labour Commission, Ofosu Asamoah, in an interview, insisted that CLOGSAG’s failure to show up at the meeting is contemptuous.

“It is an unfortunate development, and I think that it is contemptuous of the Commission. They were the first to write to us about certain understandings reached between themselves and the government, led by the Senior Presidential Advisor Yaw Osafo Maafo, and the Ministry of Employment and Labour Relations, and the Finance Ministry. These agreements pertained to a new salary structure they are asking for. Despite agreeing on something as far back as 2022 to begin in 2023, now we are in the middle of 2024, and if nothing was done, they were going to proceed on strike.”
