The Minority caucus in Parliament has been cleared by the Greater Accra Regional Police Command to embark on #OccupyBoGDemo reloaded protest slated for July 30, 2024 to demand the removal of the Governor of the Bank of Ghana and his deputies.
This follows a meeting held between the National Democratic Congress(NDC) Members of Parliament and the Police on 16/07/2024 to discuss modalities pertaining to their protest.
A statement signed by DCOP Arhin Kwasi Annor said “The route of your protest shall be from Obra Spot–Adabraka Farisco-Ridge Roundabout – National Theatre Traffic Light- High Court Complex, then branch to Atta Mills Highway and terminate at the Kwame Nkrumah Museum. You shall select ten (10) protestors who will present the petition to the authorities. The Organizers are; To take necessary steps to ensure that there is no breach of peace. To ensure that protestors conduct themselves in a peaceful manner before, during and after.”
The Police Command assured the NDC MPs of its continuous cooperation and commitment to maintain law aid order for the intended public protest within the mandate of the Ghana Police Service.
After an unsuccessful attempt to present their petition at the first protest, the Minority in Parliament resolved to hold another rally against Dr Ernest Addison.
It should be noted that on Tuesday, October 3, 2023, a coalition of minority MPs, NDC supporters, and various interest groups organized the #OccupyBoG demonstration, demanding the resignations of Dr Addison and his deputies over allegations of economic mismanagement and unauthorized currency printing.
During the protest march on Accra’s streets, the Minority’s attempt to hand over their petition directly to the Governor was thwarted when the head of security received it instead. This action did not satisfy the opposition parliamentarians and the surrounding crowd, who sought direct contact with the Governor on topics related to the Bank of Ghana’s policies and operations.
