The Senior Staff Association, Universities of Ghana (SSA-UoG) together with other unions, is embarking on an industrial strike because the government has failed to honor its promises.

According to the national chairman, Mr. George Ansong, the strike is slated for August 9, 2024, if the government fails to meet their demands.

In an interview with Kasapa News, Mr. Ansong explained that the union is taking this action due to the government’s failure to rectify the injustice regarding their vehicle maintenance allowance arrears and related arrears.

He emphasized that if the finance ministry does not address this issue, the association will embark on strike actions.

Mr. Ansong accused the government of using Machiavellian tactics to deny them an agreement reached during their first meeting.

He stated that the National Labour Commission summoned the parties for a hearing on June 19, 2024, and an agreement was reached to settle the arrears, including those of the SSA-UoG, the Federation of Senior Staff Association of Ghana (FUSSAG), and the Teachers and Educational Workers Union of Trade Union Congress (TEWU-TUC).

However, Mr. Ansong clarified that the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission is instructing universities not to pay the new rate until a letter from the Ministry authorizing the payment is released.

” This means that even those currently receiving the new rate will be denied, while those on the Controller’s payroll will remain unchanged. If the commission fails to act, the unions will be forced to take industrial action on August 9, 2024″ he stated.
