The Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ) has slammed the Member of Parliament, Ayawaso West Wuogon Lydia Seyram Alhassan, for distributing food during the special voting on Monday, December 2, 2024.

The MP, during the special voting, was seen in a video, sharing packaged food to electorates

The incident sparked widespread outrage, with critics deeming it unconstitutional, leading the Office of the Special Prosecutor to investigate the matter.

Initially, Mrs. Alhassan denied the allegations, but in a subsequent interview with Citi News, she admitted to the incident, explaining that the food distribution was done at the request of voters.

CHRAJ, however, has condemned the action, labelling it as an act of corruption.

The Commissioner of CHRAJ, Dr. Joseph Whittal, addressing journalists in Accra on Tuesday, December 3, stated, “It is not right to treat as in the legal term, to share food, to share money to anybody in the queue in preparation to vote. It is equivalent to corruption and integrity issues.”

Dr Whittal added, “So having seen that it could happen to even security officials, we have always assumed that that will not be the case. It never happened in the past but this time round, it seems it has happened so we will factor that into our next election.”
