Mike Oquaye Jnr, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) parliamentary candidate for Dome Kwabenya, has contested the declared victory of Faustina Elikplim Akrugu of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
At a press conference held on Tuesday, December 10, Oquaye alleged that NDC supporters had burned ballot papers, compromising the integrity of the electoral process.
He questioned the motives behind the destruction of ballot papers, asking why the NDC would engage in such actions if they were confident in their victory.
According to Oquaye, regional authorities requested his presence at the collation centre to address the situation following an
“illegal declaration” of results. Upon arrival, he was informed by the district officer that the declaration had been suspended pending a re-collation.
The dispute has thrown the constituency into uncertainty, as electoral authorities work to address the concerns raised by the NPP candidate. Initial results had shown Akrugu winning the seat, marking a historic win for the NDC in the traditionally NPP-held constituency.
The situation remains fluid, with the outcome of the election hanging in the balance.
The electoral authorities are working to ensure the integrity of the process, and a re-collation of the results is expected to provide clarity on the outcome.
As the constituency waits with bated breath, one thing is certain – the outcome of this election will have significant implications for the future of Dome Kwabenya.
