The Ghana Police Service has launched an investigation into the vandalism of President Akufo-Addo’s statue, located near the Effia Nkwanta Regional Hospital in the Western Region.

The statue, which was unveiled on November 6 during President Akufo-Addo’s one-day “thank you” tour of the region, has sparked public debate and controversy.

Reports indicate that unknown individuals allegedly defaced part of the monument, damaging its left leg and removing the plaque.

The statue drawn concerns, which many questioned its purpose and described it as self-congratulatory.

There have also been calls for its removal, particularly in the wake of the anticipated defeat of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the upcoming 2024 elections.

Despite the growing discontent, Dr. Kwame Asah-Asante, a Senior Political Science Lecturer at the University of Ghana, cautioned against any unlawful attempt to dismantle or destroy the statue, emphasising that the state holds the authority over such monuments.

According to the police statement, preliminary investigations have revealed that the statue’s left leg has been damaged, and its plaque removed.

The police are working to apprehend the perpetrators and bring them to justice.
