Parliament has approved the composition of its Appointments Committee, with Bernard Ahiafor, the First Deputy Speaker, as the Chairperson to vet and recommend nominees for ministerial and other key appointments.
The Appointments Committee is responsible for scrutinizing and recommending to Parliament the approval or otherwise of persons nominated by the President for appointment as Ministers of State, their Deputies, and other positions specified under the Constitution or relevant legislation.
Key members are:
– Chairperson: Bernard Ahiafor, First Deputy Speaker
– Vice Chairperson: Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah
– Ranking Member: Alexander Afenyo-Markin, Minority Leader
– Deputy Ranking Member: Patricia Appiagyei
Majority Leader Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson emphasized the importance of the newly approved composition, stating that the committee respectfully recommends to the house to adopt this report and approve the membership of the Appointments and Business Committees as composed.
In line with parliamentary procedures, the Majority Leader also noted that the Committee of Selection had been appointed on January 8, 2025, to form the membership of the Standing, Select, and other Committees of the House.
This was done according to Article 103 of the 1992 Constitution and the House’s Standing Orders.
The Committee of Selection also recomposed the membership of the Appointments and Business Committees, following established practices.
The new committee composition is expected to drive a robust and transparent vetting process, ensuring that qualified individuals are appointed to serve in the administration.
