A near-violent clash erupted between the youth of Assin Brofoyedru and the Assin Fosu Police over the installation of speed ramps on the Assin Brofoyedru-Kumasi highway.
The speed ramps were installed by residents in response to the alarming number of pedestrian fatalities on the highway, including the recent death of a 7-year-old pupils who was struck by a speeding vehicle when returning from school.
This tragic incident was the sixth reported case of a vehicle killing pedestrians on that highway, prompting the community to take matters into their own hands.
The youth contributed money to buy cement, which they used to construct the speed ramps.
However, the police deemed the installation of speed ramps illegal and attempted to remove them, leading to a violent confrontation.
The youth are adamant that they will not allow the police to remove the speed ramps unless they are refunded the money they used to buy the cement.
Speaking in an interview with Kasapa news Yaw Boagyan, the disgruntled youth argue that they took the initiative to install the speed ramps to protect their community, and they will not back down.
Nana Oteng Adjei, Committee Chairman of Assin Brofoyedeu, although supporting the action of the youth, called on the Ghana Highway authorities to intervene and ensure the installation of speed ramps to prevent further loss of life.
The community is adamant that something needs to be done to address the reckless driving on their highways.
