Communications Minister-Designate, Sam George, has assured Ghanaians that data protection will be a top priority under the administration of President John Dramani Mahama.
Speaking during his vetting on Thursday, January 30, he emphasized the government’s commitment to resourcing and retooling the Data Protection Commission to safeguard citizens’ data.
“Data indeed is a goldmine, and we would resource and retool the Data Protection Commission under the guidance and leadership of His Excellency John Mahama to ensure that data protection is a priority in our country,” he stated.
Addressing concerns about unsolicited messages, Sam George acknowledged the widespread frustration among mobile users and confirmed that steps were already being taken to mitigate the issue. He revealed that the National Communications Authority (NCA) had been directed since January 7, 2025, to collaborate with Mobile Network Operators (MNOs) to significantly reduce the problem.
“The issue of unsolicited messages is disturbing, and it’s one that the regulator, the NCA, has gotten its matching orders since the 7th of January 2025 to work with the MNOs to ensure that unsolicited messages are cut to the barest minimum. We’ll work with the MNOs to ensure that that is fully applied,” he assured.
