The National Youth Wing of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has strongly criticized the government of President John Mahama over reports suggesting plans to cancel nursing and teacher trainee allowances.

In a press release issued today, the NPP youth wing described the move as a betrayal of trust, accusing the National Democratic Congress (NDC) administration of deception.

The statement, signed by National Youth Organizer Salam Mustapha, argued that scrapping the allowances contradicts promises made during the 2024 election campaign.

“We are gobsmacked to notice the intention to cancel teacher and nursing training allowances in flagrant contrast to their promise to rather be prompt on payments during the 2024 elections campaign,” the statement read.

The NPP youth wing insisted that the government must uphold its commitment and maintain the allowances, arguing that they serve as financial relief for students and help sustain teacher and nursing training institutions. The group further criticized the government’s failure to grant university status to these colleges.

Additionally, the statement condemned what it described as an attempt by the government to “intimidate and insult” critics through media allies. The youth wing demanded an apology from President Mahama for allegedly deceiving Ghanaians and urged affected students to voice their discontent.
“This indignation from the students is reprehensible, and we demand an apology from President John Mahama and his government for further betraying the trust they rode on to power,” Salam emphasized.
