In a press statement released today, February 14, 2025, the management of Penyman Foundation and its affiliate organizations expressed their opposition to the nationwide strike called by the Civil and Local Government Staff Association, Ghana (CLOSSAG).

The strike, which is in protest of the appointment of Hon. Samuel Adom Botwey as the Managing Director of the Birth and Death Registry, has been deemed unnecessary by the Penyman Foundation. According to the foundation, CLOSSAG’s objection to the appointment raises concerns about the consistency of their stance, given that Chief Executives of Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies (MMDAs) are also appointed by the government without resistance from CLOSSAG.

Penyman Foundation also highlighted Hon. Samuel Adom Botwey’s previous experience as District Chief Executive (DCE) under President Mahama’s first term, where he worked harmoniously with CLOSSAG members. The foundation questioned why his current appointment is being met with opposition, despite involving work with the same category of public servants.

Furthermore, the Penyman Foundation criticized the politically motivated criticisms directed at President Nana Addo for appointing individuals with political backgrounds to public institutions. The foundation argued that the outcome of the 2024 election disproves the notion that such appointments lead to biased operations.

The foundation also called on organized labor, including CLOSSAG, to demonstrate against illegal mining, which persists in the country. Penyman Foundation reminded Prof. Ransford Gyampo and Sammy Gyamfi, Esq. of their previous stances against illegal mining and urged them to continue their advocacy.

In addition, Penyman Foundation expressed its support for the 24-hour economy concept, which can be sustained through the proper regulation of small-scale mining and the rosewood business. The foundation called on President Mahama to acknowledge the unemployment challenges that contributed to the rise in illegal mining and to provide alternative livelihood support for the youth affected.

In conclusion, Penyman Foundation urged CLOSSAG members to channel their energy towards addressing critical national issues and expressed their full support for the appointment of Hon. Samuel Adom Botwey as the Managing Director of the Birth and Death Registry.
