Nigerian billionaire and telecom pioneer Dr. Mike Adenuga Jr., chairman of Globacom and Conoil, paid a private visit to Ghanaian President John Dramani Mahama at his residence in Accra on Monday, June 9, 2025. The meeting, described as warm and cordial, highlighted the enduring friendship between the two leaders and underscored the strong ties between Ghana and Nigeria.
Dr. Adenuga, affectionately known as “The Spirit of Africa,” arrived in Accra for the engagement and returned to Lagos later the same day. Though the details of their discussions remain confidential, insiders indicated that the talks were significant in the context of ongoing economic and developmental cooperation between the two West African nations, particularly in telecommunications, energy, and finance.
President Mahama, who resumed office in January 2025, has been steering Ghana’s economy toward recovery, marked by a strengthened cedi and reduced fiscal pressures. Adenuga’s business interests align closely with Ghana’s development goals, making their dialogue especially pertinent to regional economic collaboration.
This visit builds on a longstanding relationship. In 2016, President Mahama honoured Dr. Adenuga with Ghana’s highest civilian award, the Companion of the Star of Ghana, recognizing his outstanding contributions to business and socio-economic development across Africa. Adenuga’s investments, particularly through Globacom, have expanded telecom infrastructure and created thousands of jobs in Ghana and beyond.
The meeting also reaffirmed their shared vision of African-led progress and solidarity. Both leaders emphasized the importance of partnerships between visionary entrepreneurs and governments to address the continent’s challenges and foster sustainable growth.
As Dr. Adenuga departed for Nigeria, the encounter left a renewed sense of optimism about the future of Ghana-Nigeria cooperation and the broader agenda of African unity and prosperity championed by these two influential figures.
