The Executive Secretary of the Importers and Exporters Association of Ghana, Mr. Samson Aasaki Awingobit, has lauded the current National Democratic Congress (NDC) government for stabilizing the cedi-dollar exchange rate and improving conditions for clearing goods at Ghana’s ports.

Speaking in an interview with Sandra Akua Darkoa Koranteng, popularly know as Akua Sonto on Kasapa 102.5 fm’s morning show ,Mr. Awingobit noted that during the months of November and December last year, under the previous administration, the cost of imports and duties for clearing goods was extremely high.

However, he stated that since the NDC assumed power, there has been a notable improvement in the business environment, especially at the ports.

He revealed that the dollar currently trades at GH₵10.3 at the customs level, making clearance of goods more affordable for importers. “The dollar is now GH₵10.3, and Ghanaians and the business community can testify to this improvement,” he said.

Mr. Awingobit emphasized that inflation has significantly reduced over the past three months, contributing to the relative stability of the local currency. He also highlighted the availability of foreign exchange at commercial banks, which he said has eliminated the need for middlemen.

Despite the NDC government not yet forming a formal Economic Management Team, he praised the efforts of key party figures such as Dr. Johnson Asiamah, Hon. Cassiel Ato Forson, and Sammy Gyamfi. According to him, their behind-the-scenes work has helped stabilize the economy and the exchange rate.

“Even without an Economic Management Team in place, these individuals are working tirelessly to ensure that the dollar rate remains stable,” Mr. Awingobit stated.
