A Deputy Minister for Food and Agriculture, Dr. Hannah Bissiw, has moved to allay fears of consumers of poultry products in the country in the wake of the official confirmation of bird flu in Ghana.
She told Fiifi Banson in an interview on Anopa Kasapa on Kasapa 102.3 FM Thursday that well cooked bird flu infected poultry is harmless to the health of consumers.
“If infected bird flu poultry finds itself on the market and I buy it, take it home, cook and consume it, nothing will happen to me.”
She, however, cautioned that farm assistants are at risk of being infected with the Avian Flu.
“Those are very active in the farm where the birds have been infected with bird flu, the risk of contracting the virus is very high.”
On Wednesday, June 10, the Ministry of Food and Agriculture announced the confirmation of bird flu in the country after test samples taken to the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) Laboratory in Padova, Italy, proved positive.
