A Communications Consultant and activists of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) Eric Ametor Quamyne has advised the Chairperson of the Electoral Commission, Mrs Charlotte Osei to desist from granting further media interviews on the contentious voters’ register.

He described the media encounters by the EC Boss as becoming “one too many”, adding that her continues granting of interviews if not ceased could cause unnecessary tension among opposing political parties ahead of the November general elections.

The Chairperson of the electoral body has in the past three days granted two extensive radio interviews during which she has responded to wide range of issues including the call for new voters register which has become a subject of controversy among the political parties and other interest groups.

There has been mixed reaction from a large section of the Ghanaian public over Mrs Osei’s recent interviews, where while some have hailed her, others have scathingly attacked her for pushing the ruling government’s agenda.

Speaking to Kwaku Owusu Adjei on Si Me So on Kasapa 102.3 FM, Mr Ametor Quarmyne stated that since the two leading parties the NDC and NPP have taken an entrenched position on the call for a new voters register, it would be advisable for the EC Boss to be reticent going forward.

“I’m not saying she only speaks about the voters register in all her interviews, however considering the period in which we are, just one slip by her could spark trouble for the entire country. As for talking,… just one word from her could mar the commendations she’s received for sometime now.”

He added: “The Electoral Commission has a Public Affairs Directorate which engages the citizenry as and when necessary, she should allow them to do much of the talking. If I had the chance to advise her, I will tell her the interviews are enough even though I’m yet to hear the fallout.
