A Security Expert at the Kofi Annan International Peace Keeping Centre (KAIPC) Dr Kwesi Anning has described as unethical and distasteful, the debate by Parliamentarians for enhanced security which was triggered by the killing of the Member of Parliament for Abuakwa North Tuesday dawn.

According to him, the Legislators lack the moral authority to push for proper security protection as they have failed to make Parliament House which is their workplace a secured place.

The former MP was gruesomely murdered at dawn at his home at Shiashie in Accra.

Police investigations showed he suffered two stab wounds, one to his rib, the other to his abdomen.

Five people including a security man, a driver and some others at the residence were later the same day picked up by the police to help with investigations.

The NPP had indicated that it suspected foul play in the murder. A team of investigators, acting upon a tip-off, arrested the suspect.

Last week the contentious issue of providing police protection for Members of Parliament was re-ignited and turned out to be the most discussed topic in the media soon after the MP was stabbed to death at his residence in Shiashie in Accra.

But speaking on the Ghana Report show on Viasat 1 TV Monday, Dr Kwesi Anning stated that there is absolutely no link between the killing of the MP and the demand or desire by Parliamentarians for extra protection.

“If you want to protect an MP, every single MP will need about four Police officers and about eight hour shift. We need a highly trained driver for each MP to be able to make a tight three point turn in our traffic under attack, the vehicle will need to be armoured hopefully, and they need to get a better understanding of their domestic and personal security.”

He added: “When they interviewed Mr Prosper Bani for his job, he made a very damning statement against Parliament that he drove in twice nobody stopped him and parked somewhere to go and read his notes… very sensibly and came back. So you cannot ride on the emotions of a slain colleague hoping that we should put in a couple more millions of cedis to protect you, when where you work and spend most of your time you haven’t thought about protecting yourself. The debate that came up immediately after the unfortunate death of this gentleman, I found it very unethical and very distasteful.

Meanwhile, the one week memorial celebration of the death of the late Member of Parliament for Abukwa North, JB Danquah Adu is set to be held Tuesday 16 February.

The event will come off at his family house in Tafo, Akim Abuakwa North in the Eastern Region.
