A footballer in Argentina has shot dead a referee during an amateur match and injured a member of the opposition before going on the run.

The referee, 48-year-old César Flores, had shown the shooter a red card moments earlier and died from three shots to his head, chest and neck.

The match was abandoned and the injured player – Walter Zárate, 25 – was rushed to hospital, where he is reportedly no longer in a critical condition.

A police spokesman said: “It all happened during the match.

“We don’t know what happened with the referee but the player was angry and went to get his gun and killed him.”

The incident took place in the Córdoba province of Argentina on Sunday.

Police have said they are still hunting the suspect, who carried out the shooting after retrieving a gun from his bag and reentering the field of play following his dismissal.
