Hiplife grandpapa, Reggie Rockstone, has asked people who assert that Sarkodie’s invitation to Harvard University to speak at a conference is ‘no big deal’ to shut up.
Ghanaian rapper, Sarkodie received an invitation to speak at the Harvard Business School and African Business conference on the theme, ‘The Art of the Hustle’. The Original rapper shared with the students his success story, how to innovate among others.
After the news broke, writer, Osarfo Anthony indicated that he does not see the invitation as a big deal because, “Harvard University is big in the field of Academia —- Sarkodie is big too in the field of Arts, Culture, and Showbiz. So why compare the 2 in ‘bigness?’”
This has generated a huge debate on social media and showbiz review platforms.
Sharing his thoughts on the issue on Radio Univers’ mid-morning show, Brunch2Lunch with Abrantepa, Reggie Rockstone said Sarkodie should be commended for having chalked enviable successes than nullifying it.
“People will say I’m biased when it comes to Sark, people also forget that I’m a fan before being a big brother. It’s definitely a plus for Ghana. Because of this move he made, a whole bunch of people who didn’t know about hiplife or Ghanaian music will take a listen to our music,” he said.
Reggie Rockstone continued, “Just let him be. A brother from Tema is now giving a speech at Harvard and you tell me because he is a big brand it is not a big deal? Was he a big brand when he was born? Just clap for him or shut up. It gets on my nerves but then again, I’m not surprised. We are the same people who did it to Kwame Nkrumah and today we applaud him when he is gone.”
Meanwhile, Angel, a member of Sarkodie’s management team has debunked reports that Sarkodie was invited to perform at the 18th Annual African conference which holds at the Harvard University and he [Sarkodie] proposed that he be made to speak to the students as well.
According to Angel who spoke on Pluzz FM’s AM Pluzz, the content of the invitation letter sent them contained both as a portion read, “We believe that the richness of your music experience will be very enlightening and the uniqueness of your music will be very thrilling to our guest who will be coming from different parts of the world to learn more about the diverse business opportunity and cultural experiences that Africa has to offer.”
