The Chairman of Parliament Select committee on Health, Joseph Yieleh Chireh has underscored the need for the Tema General Hospital to be upgraded into a Regional Hospital to serve as a referral centre for Tema, and areas spanning to Akosombo.

He suggested for the facility to be retooled with the necessary development of specialization to give it a referral status.

“Tema should be treated as a region in terms as health so that the eastern half of all the villages and other places for Akosombo up to the point in Tema; it should be a referral center,” he told Accra-based Citi FM Friday.

The Tema General Hospital is inundated with infrastructure deficit as the facility currently is overstretched to serve more than 900,000 patients in the underserved areas.

The maternity ward, which used to admit about six women, now takes as high as 36 mothers, according to the Medical Superintendent of the Hospital, Dr. Kwabena Adusei .

Mr. Yieleh Chireh, also a former Minister has called for extension of more facilities to Tema to ease the pressure on the scanty health facilities especially the Tema General Hospital.
