Ghana is to start issuing out visa on arrival to citizens of all member countries of the African Union.

Numbering 54, citizens of these countries will be accorded the courtesy when they arrive in Ghana from their respective countries of origin, President Mahama has announced.

Mahama made the announcement during last Sunday’s parade of security officials, schools and institutions in the Ghanaian capital, Accra.

The drive takes effect from July this year, he added. Ghana currently allows easy access to its borders for all citizens of the Economic Community of West African states, which she is part of.

A move that is set to create some excitement across the region given what it does for bilateral trade, it comes at a point where only 25 percent African countries offer visas on arrival to nationals of other states within the region.

Ghana’s travel and tourism industry accounts for 5.9% of its Gross Domestic Product.

The last few years has seen Mahama pass some cross boarder deals; last year, Ghana and Mauritius agreed to waive visa requirements for holders of each other’s national passports.

The agreement allows all Ghanaians, including holders of ordinary Ghanaian passports to enter into Mauritius without any visa restrictions. The same courtesies will be extended to Mauritius nationals coming to Ghana.
