Road transport operators have announced an increment of transport fares, effective Monday, June 22, 2015.

The increases range from 10p to GH₵14.00 depending on the distance of the journey and the type of transport a commuter boards.

A statement issued in Accra Thursday and signed by the General Secretaries of the GPRTU and GRTCC, Stephen K. Okudzeto and Alhaji Aliyu Baba on behalf of the Road Transport Operators attributed the price adjustment to the increase in the various components that go into the operation of commercial transport services.

The components they say include spare parts, fuel, and cost of vehicle among others.

“As a result, road transport fares have been revised upwards to reflect the changes in the prices of the components. This is also in line with the bi-annual review of transport fares in order to take into consideration changes in prices of vehicle components.”

The new transport fares cover intra-city (trotro), inter-city (long distance) and taxi cabs.

The GPRTU had long threatened to increase transport fares following a 9% increase in petroleum prices in May.

It targeted June 5, 2015 but had to suspend it and monitor the outcome of the government’s position on deregulating the oil marketing sector, the statement suggested.

Petrol prices have this June shot up further by some 4% after a government of Ghana announcement washing its hands off the pricing of the commodity.
