The circumstances of the case involving a mother of nine who was slapped with 11 year jail term for selling alcohol mixed with Indian hemp to the public will have to be reviewed, the Ministry of Gender and Social Protection has said.

The Ministry has indicated it is liaising with the Attorney General’s Office to assess the case, while it makes arrangement to provide legal services to the convict.

“My attention has been brought to the case of a Ghanaian woman, mother of 9 children, who has been sentenced 11 years with hard labour for selling alcohol mixed with Indian hemp to the public.

“We are liaising with the Attorney General’s Office to assess the circumstances of the case and provide support including legal services. Our Social Service officers will also visit the children to assess their welfare and provide support, the Minister, Nana Oye Lithur said in a statement Monday.

Ama Forson was sentenced by an Accra Circuit Court last week after she was charged with unlawful possession of narcotic drugs.

She had pleaded not guilty to the charge denying any knowledge of the drugs in her defence put at the court.
