The Ghana Police Service has dissociated itself from a statement made by one DSP David Selom Hukportie of the Narcotics Unit that Cannabis should be decriminalize.

According to the police, his comments does not represent the official position of the Police Service.

The Head of the Unit, David Selom Hukportie told TV3 recently  cannabis, popularly referred to as ‘Wee’, should be decriminalized to help in the fight against the abuse of the narcotic drug in the country.

“We also need to look at decriminalisation” he noted, adding “…when you look at the situation and you want law enforcement to tackle it without the criminal justice coming in to help it, it will be a problem.”

But the Director of Public Relations of the Ghana Police Service, Supt. Cephas Arthur said the Police has launched investigations into the unfortunate comments by the officer.

“We enforce the law, and the laws as they are in the Criminal and other offences Act frown upon Narcotics business whether you are cultivating, trafficking or using it and processing it is criminal and unlawful. And that is what the Police enforces. so we think that for a Police officer to express an opinion that is a bit contrary to what the law holds is unbecoming of a police officer. We shall investigate exactly why he said this and what he meant by that and if  ther is anything unprofessional on his part we shall accordingly deal with him,”
