Chairman of the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) of Parliament, Kwaku Agyeman-Manu, has deferred all public interest questions relating to overbilling of electricity tariff directed at officials of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) to the Mines and Energy Committee for responses.

According to the PAC Chairman who is also the MP for Dormaa Central, since the Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Edward Doe Adjaho has directed the Amadu Sorogho chaired Mines and Energy to inquire into the matter; it was proper for all questions relating to the issue to be tabled before the Committee for answers.

In his view, officials of the ECG will be appearing before the Mines and Energy Committee and therefore asking questions relating to the subject matter will undermine the work of the Mines and Energy Committee.

He urged Members serving on the PAC who were anxious in demanding answers from the service provider to exercise restraints and channel all their questions to the Mines and Energy Committee when the ECG officials appear before it for questioning.

Kwaku Agyeman-Manu made the directive on Thursday when officials of the ECG appeared before the PAC to respond to queries raised by the Auditor General in the 2013 audited accounts of the utility service provider.

Members serving on the Committee after interrogating the ECG officials on the audited accounts of the Company expressed the desire to ask public interest questions relating to the overbilling of customers, especially, those using pre-paid meters, but were prevented from doing so by the chairman of the PAC.

No amount of plea from the members could change the mind of the Chairman of the PAC.
