The Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL) has cautioned residents of Weija of massive flooding following the opening of floodgates of the Weija Dam.

The company said the move has become necessary following the heavy rains in the past few days that has caused the level of the dam to rise.

Communications Manager of GWCL, Stanley Matey in an interview said in a bid to prevent the dam from collapsing there’s need to drain the facility of excess water.

He disclosed that the GWCL has started minimal spillage and has opened one gate of the dam at a very low level of about three inches, but added that because the dam is rising steadily more spill gates are to be opened in the coming days.

Mr Martey has asked residents near the dam to relocate as soon as possible to avert the loss of lives.

Communities which are likely to be affected when the flood gates are opened are Tetegu, Oblogo, Pambros Salt, Lower Mc Carthy Hill, Weija, Bojo Beach, Ada Kopey and other surrounding communities.
