An inmate at the Nsawam Prison has revealed an unpleasant incident he encountered in the detention facility with host of Kasapa FM’s ‘Yen nna’ show.

According to the young man who spoke on condition of anonymity, he was given a 55 year jail sentence for purchasing a stolen car from an unknown buyer hence his languishing in jail in the midst of hardened criminals.

“I unknowingly bought a stolen car from unidentified persons, prior to that I was arrested and asked to produce them and because I didn’t know their whereabouts, I was given a jail term of 55 years which I have only served 2 years.”

He stated that the Nsawam Prison is in awful condition, adding that the place is choked with over 3500 inmates instead of the 700 holding capacity.

Asked of how they get unprescribed items like phones, wee and cocaine into the prison, he replied that “For me personally I have never done that but there are others who get that deal done with some of the Prison officers.

“Most of the Prison Officers are here for money so they purchase these illegal drugs for the inmates.

“Nsawam prison is noted for high corruption incidence because these same prison officers conduct unannounced search and cease unofficial items like phones from us but you will later see a colleague inmate with your ceased phone and you will only realized that it was sold to the inmate by the officers.”

He reiterated that most of the prisoners are not guilty yet they are camped in the same room with hardened criminals thus making it unsafe to dwell in the same abode with such ‘dangerous’ prisoners.
