The ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) has served notice that the party will not contest in the upcoming Abetifi by-election slated for July 19.
The by-election follows the death of late MP for Abetifi Constituency, Peter Wiafe Pepera who died on Saturday May 21 at the 37 Military Hospital after battling with an ailment.
The Electoral Commission has said the impending by-election is in accordance with Article 112(5) of the Constitution.
“Nominations for the election will be taken on Tuesday the 21st day of June and Wednesday the 22nd day of June, 2O16 at the District Office of the Commission at Abetifi in the Eastern Region, from 9:00am to 12:00noon and 2:00pm to 5:00pm both days, the EC said in a statement.
But the Eastern Regional Chairman of the NDC, Tawiah Boateng in an interview with Kasapa News said the party is not interested in the election adding that barely five months to the general elections, it is not prudent to take part in such an exercise.
“We can’t afford to pump money into an election of which the winner will serve in Parliament for only five months and then go for a major elections few months later. We’ll rather wait for the November Parliamentary election where we’ll exert our energies and resources.”
The Abetifi remains a stronghold of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP).
