The Ashanti Regional Chairman of the opposition New Patriotic Party(NPP), Bernard Antwi Bosiako aka Chairman Wontumi has dispelled rumours that he led a group of men to consult a deity in Talensi to enable the NPP win the impending bye-election in that area.

Pictures of him and other able-bodied men walking bare-chested on a vast land and subsequently appearing at a deity have gone viral on social media platforms, sparking speculations that the NPP has resorted to employing superstitious means to win the seat.

The Electoral Commission has set July 7 for the bye-election which has become necessary following the resignation of the former NPP MP Robert Nachinab Mosore who has been enskinned as Tongo Chief under the name Tongorana Kubilsong Nalebegtan.

With less than a week to the elections, campaign activities in Talensi has intensified with the contest becoming more keener among the two leading political parties.

Both parties are accusing each other of using unorthodox means to win the coveted seat.

Speaking on afternoon political show Si Me So on Kasapa 102.3 FM Thursday, Mr Antwi Boasiako admitted that the said pictures were his, but was quick to add that there was an explanation to how he appeared in that picture.

“We are out here in Talensi campaigning feverishly for our candidate and as you know every traditional area has its norms, where we visited one has to take off his cloths and footwear before he is allowed to meet and speak with the people, hence my appearance.

“As you know, one has to do what the Romans do when you go to Rome and give unto Ceasar what is Ceasar’s. I have not consulted any juju man.”

Chairman Wontumi stated that the NPP was not the least perturbed by the machinations being employed by the ruling NDC party to win the bye-election, adding that the NPP with its good works in the constituency is certain to retain the seat.

Accusation and counter accusation of vote buying by way of sharing huge sums of money and other freebies for the electorates has become a central theme of the campaign.

The election promises to be keenly contested between the two Parties. The NDC and NPP, have former Deputy Director of the Ghana Prison Service B.T Baba and an Nsawam Government hospital worker Thomas Zoanad Wuni as their respective candidates.

With few days to go for the election, the constituency has seen intense political activity as high ranking government officials including the Vice President, Paa Kwesi Amissah Arthur and NPP running mate Dr. Mahamadu Bawumia have all stormed the area to campaign for their candidates.
