The two Policemen stationed at Donkorkrom together with a mechanic who were arrested in connection to the attempted robbery on the GCB Bank Bullion Van at Maamekrobo near Tease in the Eastern Region have been charged.

The trio; Solomon Elvis Mensah with Police ID No. 39482 G/CPL, Daniel Kissi Abrokwa with Police ID No. 44912 G/L/CPL and Hafisu Mohammed aka Danjuma were charged with three counts – conspiracy to commit crime to wit murder which is contrary to Section 23(1) of Act 29/60, attempted robbery contrary to Section 18 and 149 of Act 29/60 and Murder contrary to Section 26 of the Criminal Code 1960 (Act 29).

The trio appeared before the Accra Central Magistrate Court Tuesday. They have been remanded with the case adjourned to September 6, 2016.

The two Policemen, according to the charge sheet presented to the court had always harboured the idea of robbing the Bullion Van of the GCB Bank with registration number GN 1344 – 15 which usually comes to Donkorkrom to supply money to the branch office.

On August 16, 2016, the two Policemen who were on duty at GN Bank and GCB respectively decided to exercise their plan of robbing the Bullion Van of any cash it was carrying.

This plan, according to the charge sheet, was discussed with Hafisu Mohammed aka Danjuma, a taxi driver and a mechanic who is a friend to the duo.

“The two Policemen waylaid the Bullion Van at a spot in between Tease and Maamekrobo with each armed with AK47 assault rifle at about 10:30am.  Accused Hafisu Mohammed drove his taxi cab with registration number 1860 -09 towards Ekye Amanfrom to monitor the arrival of the Bullion Van. About 20 minutes later, accused Hafisu Mohammed signaled the Policemen and on seeing the Bullion Van, they opened fire killing the driver, David Kofi Sarpong, 52. A Police guard on board the Van got injured. He however, managed to return fire compelling the two Policemen o flee into the bush”, the charge sheet in part read.

The two officers, according to the charge sheet, called Hafisu Mohammed who picked them in a bid to escape.

“Information got to the Police at Donkorkrom about the incident and they mobilized men who managed to arrest the three accused persons on board the taxi cab. Two AK 47 rifles, 23 rounds of ammunition, one cutlass and two metal bars were retrieved from the taxi cab”.

The body of the deceased, the charge sheet added, has been deposited at the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital mortuary awaiting autopsy with the Police guard also treated and discharged at Donkorkrom Presbyterian Hospital.
