Security officials supervising the ongoing by-election in Talensi have arrested a vehicle stashed with an AK-47 rifle, machetes and other dangerous weapons heading for Tongo, capital of the Talensi District.

The Ford van with registration number UE-16-13 was few kilometers away from entering the Tongo area when the driver was waylaid by the security officials who were on high alert.

It is unclear who owns the weapons and what they were to be used for.

The by-election is taking place to elect a replacement for the former MP for the area, Robert Mosore who resigned his position after his enskinment as the Paramount Chief of Tongo.

Results are expected by close of day. Polling ends at 5:00 pm.

About 39,523 registered voters are expected to vote in the by-elections.
