Krontihene of Akwamu Tradition Council, Nana Asare Akowua, has appealed to the presidential candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, to revive the Akosombo Textiles Limited (ATL) when he wins the December 7 presidential poll.
He wants the former Attorney-General to look for investors to restore the collapsed textile factory immediately he assumed the reins of power.
This, he noted, will enable the jobless youth within the Akwamu Kingdom get employed to make some money to look after their families.
According to him, youth unemployment within the Akwamu Kingdom remains the biggest challenge, following the collapse of the Akosombo Textiles Limited (ATL) which whilst in operation, employed some 8,000 workers.
The collapsed facility was the source of livelihood to residents from four districts namely, Asuogyaman, Yilo Krobo, Upper Manya Krobo and North Tongu.
“You (Nana Akufo-Addo) are an Akwamu and we are appealing to you not to forget your people when you come into office. You have assured the nation of establishing one factory in every district. The only factory here in Asuogyaman is ATL. But under some people, this factory has collapsed. So, when you to power, you should look for investors to revive ATL,” noted Nana Asare Akowua.
He added, “Even you do not bring factories here, the revival of ATL will provide jobs for the youth in the four districts.”
Nana Asare Akowua made this observation when the NPP flag bearer paid a courtesy call on him at his palace on Tuesday.
The opposition leader is on a four-day tour campaign tour to the Eastern Region.
Nana Asare Akowua commenting further also appealed to the Akufo-Addo to construct the roads in the Asuogyaman constituency, especially, the Marine to Gyakiti and the Apegusu-Anyanso to Mpakadan roads.
Those roads, he argued, have been neglected over the last eight years.
