Parliament has advised the Member of Parliament-elect for Talensi, Benson Tongo Baba to be diligent in the discharge of his duties.
He was further advised to ensure that whatever he does should go beyond plenary sittings since the work of a parliamentarian is not only restricted at the plenary.
“Let me also congratulate and welcome you to the House. However, I would like to urge you to ensure due diligence in the discharge of your work,” noted the Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Edward Doe Adjaho.
The comments of the Speaker came moments after he administered the oath of allegiance and office to B. T. Baba Tuesday.
The Majority Leader, Hon. Alban Sumana Bagbin, in remarks also urged the new MP to respect traditional authorities, especially, the custodians of the land who elected him into office.
“For the MP to succeed, he must be able to gel into the expectations of the custodians of the land,” he said.
He added “He had to work harder to catch up with the rest of the members because he has some few months to go. He’s got to be prolific in his constituency and to show that come 2016 he is ready for their mandate again.”
Deputy Minority Whip and MP for Sunyani West, Ignatius Baffour Awuah, also commenting on the event urged the former Deputy Director-General of the Ghana Prisons Service to always let issues of national interest to be paramount in whatever he does.
He said if one studies the results of the Talensi by-election, it was obvious that majority of the people were not in favour of Mr. Baba’s candidacy but managed to go through the election with the simple majority rule.
To that effect, he advised the new MP that “in carrying out his duties as a law maker, he should be an all embracing person irrespective of which political the person approaching him belongs to.”
