Former President Jerry John Rawlings and leading members of the 31st December revolution, will today December 31, 2016, mark the 35th anniversary of the December 31, 1981 revolution.

The movement toppled Dr Hilla Limann of the Third Republic.

The ceremony underway is being held at the Revolutionary Square, opposite the Flagstaff House.

This year’s anniversary being celebrated under the theme: “31st December – The Principles Never Change” will see Mr Rawlings address the gathering on issues of corruption and accountability.

Flt. Lt. Jerry John Rawlings led the Provisional National Defence Council (PNDC) for eleven years, after having toppled Dr Limann. He subsequently stood for, and won two democratically organised elections in 1992 and 1996, as a civilian on the ticket of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), which he founded.
