A 30-member Planning Committee for Ghana@60 celebration has been inaugurated.

The committee to steer affairs of the august event has Mr. Ken Amankwah as it Chairman, with Deputy Chief of Staff at the Presidency, Samuel Abu Jinapor as the Vice Chairman.

The committee being unveiled by the President at the Flagstaff also has some state institution representation like the Ghana Armed Forces, the Ghana Police Service, National Security, Ghana Immigration Service and the Ghana Revenue Authority among others.

The last time the country celebrated its anniversary was in the year 2007 during the J.A Kufour led-regime of the New Patriotic Party(NPP) where the Ghana@ 50 anniversary was held.

But that huge celebration was fraught with controversies, as there were allegations of misappriopriating of funds by officials who led the celebrations.

Dr. Wereko-Brobby, a former Chief Executive Officer of the defunct Ghana @50 Secretariat, and Mr. Mpiani, former Chief of Staff in the erstwhile NPP administration and also the Chairman of the National Planning Committee for the celebration, were put on trial by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) government for the various roles they played during the 50th independence anniversary and the 2007 African Union Summit hosted by Ghana.

However, the two contested the trial and were discharged by the Accra Fast Track High Court on August 11, 2010 on the grounds that due process was not followed to warrant their prosecution.
