Black Stars defender, Jonathan Mensah has said it will be unfair to blame locally based Ghanaian footballers for jumping at contracts from foreign clubs, stating that these players are forced to be responsible for the welfare of their families.

The mass player exodus has robbed the domestic top flight league of many top players in the last few years, with majority of them heading to clubs in South Africa, North Africa or obscure leagues in Europe.

In April this year, Ghana Coach Avram Grant joined many campaigners who advised locally based players against rushing to leave the local league.

But, Jonathan Mensah feels these locally based players cannot be blamed or judged for their desire to step out to the foreign leagues.

“The league is not quite the same like it used to be, financially it is very tough for the players who are currently playing in the local league and they also want to be leaders in their families and be responsible and to be responsible is really tough. I know what am talking about because I started this at a young age and thank God am still finding my way through it, I don’t blame them for wanting more income in foreign countries. I do not blame them at all but the league which has deteriorated.”
