Students of the Bimbilla Senior High School(SHS) and all basic schools have been asked to stay home following the mayhem in the town.
At least ten people have been killed and several others were severely wounded after sporadic gunshots in Bimbilla.
The incident has been attributed to an attempted enskinment of a sub-chief in the town by the regent despite warnings from Police.
A worried parent, Mohammed Hafiz told Accra-based Citi FM that the decision to allow the school children stay home a week is laudable.
“…The way the fighting is going on, nobody knows who is likely to be a stray bullet casualty. The children are not safe in the schools, because the bullets are going helter skelter in towm, and people are running with guns shooting everywhere indiscriminately. And the school is at the heart of the town, not outskirt. Is the life of the child that matters first not education. And even psychologically the environment is not a good learning environment. If a child is in class and thinking of bullets and gunshots, I don’t think that child can learn well.”
Meanwhile, the Northern Regional Security Council(REGSEC) led by the Regional Coordinating Director, Alhaji Issahaku Alhassan visited the troubled Bimbilla township to ascertain the extent of damage by last Thursday’s Chieftaincy clashes.
