President Akufo-Addo’s speech on the 60th Anniversary had a lot that angered members of the opposition, who have raised concerns of an iconic political figure who was overlooked as the President paid tribute to several past leaders that contributed to the struggle of Ghana’s Independence and post-Independence.

In his speech, which about 80 percent covered the sacrifices of Ghana’s past leaders, Mr. Akufo-Addo  paid special tribute to some key leaders who fought for Ghana’s freedom under the British Colony.

Others who are not listed among the forefront fighters for political freedom, but also fought equally hard for the country’s cultural integrity and the identification of Ghanaians were also mentioned in the President’s speech.

Speaking on Anopa Kasapa on Kasapa 102.5 FM, the General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress(NDC) Johnson Asiedu Nketiah said he was saddened that, President Akufo-Addo’s speech did not acknowledge, ex-military leader, Jerry John Rawlings, who according him, is a single longest leader whose contribution to Ghana’s multi-party democracy is significant in Ghana’s political history.

“His significant achievement that other Presidents after him built on is that, it is his revolution that moved Ghana from a negative economic growth to a positive economic growth, and since his time Ghana has moved on a positive trajectory in our economic growth. This I believe deserved some mention in the President’s speech.

“From Independence, it was President Rawlings that led the country back to multi-party democracy, and hence ought to have been mentioned in Akufo-Addo’s speech.”
