The Greater Accra Regional Minister, Ishmael Ashitey has backed calls from some Chiefs in the Tema metropolis for the appointment of an indigence to serve as Tema Metropolitan Chief Executive(MCE).
According to him, the new MCE must understand the culture of the people since the Tema enclave is an indigenous society.
His comment comes on the back of calls made by Elders of the Tema stool praying the president to appoint a Ga-indigene as MCE for the Tema Metropolitan Assembly.
Speaking in an interview with Accra-based Citi FM, Mr. Ashitey said although there are several competent people eyeing the same position, it will serve the interest of the Assembly to get somebody who is a local and understands the culture of the people to be appointed as MCE.
“If I’m to advise the President- I would have asked him to consider the plea of the Tema people. The fact of the matter is that these are people they have two different festival. We have the Kpelejoo and Homowo festivals. This entails a lot of traditional activities that take place. It’s an indigenous society and they must get somebody who’ll understand them in going about their daily life and managing their culture and lifestyle in the locality.”
