Unicorn Air Charter Services, a new Ghanaian airline has secured its Air Operators Certificate (AOC), from the Ghana Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA).

The acquisition of the AOC, paves the way for the airline to start commercial operations.

Focused on charter flights, the certification of Unicorn adds to the increasing number of Ghanaian-based airlines operating in the sub-regional aviation industry.

It comes after the airline receiving its Air Carrier Licence (ACL), in October last year which served as a preparatory licence towards acquiring the AOC.

Mr. Abdulai Alhassan, Acting Director General of GCAA, handing over the ACL to the management of the airline at the Kotoka International Airport in Accra, commended the management of the airline for enduring the rigorous certification process.

He said the GCAA, as the regulator was committed in ensuring adherence to high standards for aviation safety, and assured the airline of its continuous co-operation.

He, however, urged the airline to ensure efficiency quality services in their operations so as to add value to Ghana’s aviation industry.

“It is one thing getting a licence and another thing sustaining it,” he told the airline’s management, and reminded them that the Authority would be undertaking regular inspections to ensure compliance to operating standards.

Philip Ayisa, Managing Director of Unicorn Air, receiving the certificate, thanked the GCAA for the cooperation and technical support that aided the airline to successfully secure its licence.

“This is a milestone for us, and also marks an important step in the growth of the airline industry in Ghana,” he said.

He gave assurance of quality and efficient services, and promised to abide by the aviation regulations and standards.

Mr. Ayisa told journalists after the presentation, that the airline would be operating three executive jets by the end of this year, and increase it to about 10 next year through collaboration with other investors.

He said the aim of the airline was to make air transport cheaper and easier to access, adding that the charter service was available for people who need to make quick trips across country or across countries in the sub-region.

A subsidiary of UHI Holdings, Unicorn Air Charter Services aims at offering charters flights services for business, sports and medical evacuation purposes, and other ancillary services.

UHI Holdings is one of Ghana’s thriving firms with holdings in haulage & logistics, microfinance, security services, wholesale & retail of mineral water, and business development consultancy.
