Five Prisoners have been arraigned before the Half Assini District Magistrate Court in the Western Region for beating a fellow inmate to death.

The deceased, reportedly stepped on the five accused persons as he tried to find his way from the decongested prison ward to the washroom.

They are expected to reapper in court on April 27.

The Prosecutor Sgt Richard Amoah told the court presided over by Mr Abdul Majid Eliasu that the deceased, aged 48, was arrested on 26th March over allegation of theft. He was then detained and put in the same cells with the accused persons.

The deceased, obviously feeling scared at the spectacle in the cells, moved about and in the process stepped on the five accused who were sleeping on the floor.

The deceased was beaten the next day when he tried to open the door to the cell to take his bath.

The prosecution told the court that hours later the deceased was found lying on the floor almost lifeless, and was rushed to the Half Assini Government Hospital for treatment but pronounced dead on arrival.
