The Methodist Bishop of the Obuasi Diocese, Rt. Rev. Stephen Richard Bosomtwi-Ayensu says the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) party’s attack on the General Overseer of the International Central Gospel Church (ICGC) Pastor Mensah Otabil, is a diversionary tactic meant to take the minds of Ghanaians off the economic hardships in the country.
Koku Anyidoho, a deputy Secretary of the NDC has sharply criticized Pastor Mensah Otabil for absenting himself from all National Prayer Services initiated by late President Atta Mills consistently for four years, but has now found time to attend NPP internal meetings.
His comments follow the recent meeting held at the instance of ex President John Agyekum Kuffour where there were attempts to broker peace between the Presidential Candidate Nana Akufo Addo, National Chairman, Paul Afoko and General Secretary, Kwabena Agyepong.
The meeting was said to have been attended by some key senior clergymen including Pastor Mensah Otabil and Moderator of the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana, Rt. Rev Prof. Emmanuel Martey among others.
For Koku Anyidoho, he is shocked that a man of God did not see the need to honour invitations to intercede for the country like his fellow clergymen did, but comfortably sits in an NPP meeting that was meant to be secretly held.
However speaking to Kasapa News on Tuesday, Rt. Rev. Stephen Richard Bosomtwi-Ayensu who disagreed with the position held by Koku Anyidoho stated that there are more important issues that must engage the attention of the ruling party.
“Junior Doctors who have worked for the past 11 months are yet to receive their salary; teachers monies have also delayed. These are some of the issues we should be discussing as a country and finding solutions to. We are diverting attention from such critical issues with this Otabil matter”.
He added that he finds nothing wrong with Pastor Mensah Otabil honouring the invitation of Ex President Kuffour.
“I disagree with anyone who says pastors must not be involved in political issues, Otabil is a man of God who is full of wisdom and he has been called upon to help solve a party’s problem, and what is wrong with that, it was good that he attended that meeting. We must find out from him why he was unable to attend the National Prayer Services. Pastors must be eager to speak up when things are going wrong in this country”.
