The Director General of the Ghana Health Service, Dr. Appiah Denkyira has advocated for private health facilities in the country to open up their services to meet the growing demand of Ghana’s Health sector.

He says improving the status of private health facilities in the country could be a resolve to meet challenging health situations that may emerge in the public health sector.

Speaking to Fiifi Banson on Anopa Kasapa on Kasapa 102.3 FM, the Director General of the Ghana Health Service said in order to contain contingencies in health matters in general, the private health sector should be well resourced and retooled to cater for emergencies from the public hospitals.

Dr. Denkyira’s suggestion comes on the back of the prevailing labour turmoils that has rocked the country’s health sector, with public health doctors deserting their posts in  an ongoing strike action across the country.

The industrial action by the doctors is to be heightened in the coming days after they withdrawing emergency services today pending an ultimate decision to resign en masse if the demand on their conditions of service is not met.

Dr. Appiah Denkira is of the view that a healthy collaboration existing between the public and the private health facilities can facilitate growth in the health sector in general.

He however, disclosed that the GHS is in talks with the striking doctors to reconsider the withdrawal of emergency services in the ongoing strike action.

“We’re engaging them and pleading with them that they will rescind their decision on withdrawing emergency services, as they still negotiate with government.

“Meanwhile, I know they still communicate with their patients and administer services to them.”

The GHS Boss, has also kicked against employing Cuban doctors to work in Ghana should the strike action prolong or get worse.

“It is expensive to employ these Cuban doctors, they will charge more if they are called upon. I prefer us using our local doctors instead”.
