A solemn funeral service has been held for the two children who died after a building they were living in collapsed on them at Kwadaso in the Ashanti regional capital, Kumasi.
The two girls, a twelve year old student of the Toase senior high school, Abigail Donkor and a seven year old girl Kate Boakye died on the spot when the incident occurred on Saturday night during the heavy down pour.
Two other children survived the accident.
One child Lina Boakye is currently on admission at the emergency unit of the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital with another Maame Yaa, being treated for a broken limb.
The National Coordinator of the National Disaster Management Organisation Eric Nana Agyemang, authorities of the Kumasi metropolitan Assembly and the Member of Parliament for Kwadaso Dr. SK Nuama visited to commiserate with the family.
NADMO donated thirty mattresses, ten bags of rice, twenty buckets, forty cups, two cartons of soap, two boxes of matches, twenty mosquito nets, forty rubber bowls and two cartons of oil to the family and the other tenants whose rooms were affected by the incident.
Speaking to Abusua FM’s Osei Kwadwo, the Operations Manager of NADMO in the Kwadaso Sub Metro, Kwabena Appiah Kubi said the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly has ordered for the demolition of the remnants of the collapsed building.
The decision according to him was taken because it was established that the building they were living in; had architectural defects which resulted in parts of it eventually collapsing.
He however indicated that a thousand cedis has been allocated to each of the ten families comprising thirty five adults and children who have been asked to vacate the building.
“The Mayor of Kumasi has directed that the tenants vacate the building. We have directed them to leave by Friday. The sub metro and the regional coordinating council have decided to give all the ten families in the house a thousand cedis each to resettle them before we demolish the whole building,” he stated.
Mr. Appiah Kubi disclosed that the monies will be disbursed to the affected tenants by Wednesday morning.
