Embattled General Secretary of the NPP Kwabena Agyepong has told Kasapa FM he has not resigned from the party.
He told Kwaku Owusu Adjei on Si mi so Tuesday, a supposed resignation letter making rounds is alien to him.
‘I am currently at home; i know nothing about this.”
Agyepong’s denial comes in the wake of an ongoing party crisis that has made him hugely unpopular. With the party’s key regional leaders voting to unseat him, and the National Chairman Paul Afoko, it remains to be seen just how long he would hang on.
Few hours ago, the party’s leader Nana Akuffo Addo was at its headquarters in Accra to ascertain for himself the security situation, and also to be briefed on recent happenings in the party.
His visit followed reports of a youth group taking over the security detail at the headquarters ostensibly to prevent its embattled General Secretary Kwabena Agyepong, and National Chairman Paul Afoko, from accessing it.
The NPP has been plunged into a national party crisis, with Afoko and Agyepong at the centre of it.
On Tuesday, an Accra court remanded Gregory Afoko, a brother of the national Chairman, for his alleged role in the murder of Adams Mahama, the party’s Upper East Chairman.
Afoko and Agyepong’s handling of key party issues in recent times has irked the rank and file of the party, one of which resulted in the death of Adams.
Emergency regional meetings were held in the three regions last weekend to as it were begin a process that would eventually lead to the two being ousted from the party.
Nana Akuffo Addo, who was alleged to be behind the hurriedly arranged meetings, has since denied his involvement.
In a statement released on Sunday, and signed by his Press Secretary, Eugene Arhin, he said “this impression is totally wrong, flawed, and mischievous.”
The statement gave out the facts of the matter as:
1. On his arrival from Europe on May 22, he met in the evening with the Chairman and General Secretary of the party to review the recent, unfortunate, tragic developments that had taken place in the party. They agreed that a joint meeting of the National Executive Committee and the National Council of Elders be convened for Monday, May 25, to deliberate on them.
2. The next day, May 23, at the funeral in Bolgatanga of the late Adams Mahama, he took the opportunity to inform the Regional Chairmen and others about the impending National Executive Committee meeting scheduled for Monday, May 25th. He was then informed by the Regional Chairmen that they had already scheduled a meeting of their respective Regional Executive Committees for the same Monday, May 25th, and that they therefore were requesting that on his return to Accra, he should inform the National Chairman of this and seek an adjournment of the National Executive Committee meeting.
3. On his return to Accra, on Saturday, May 23, he informed the National Chairman of this development, and urged the National Chairman and the General Secretary to make contact with the Regional Chairmen to sort the matter out so that the National Executive Committee meeting could take place as scheduled.
4. To his surprise, on Sunday May 24, he received notice that the National Chairman had cancelled the National Executive Committee meeting scheduled for Monday, May 25, without any prior reference to him.
These are the facts of the matter and it is thus clear that Nana Akufo-Addo bore no responsibility whatsoever for the convening of the Regional Executive Committee meetings. Nana Akufo-Addo wants the membership of the NPP to understand that he continues to work for understanding and unity in the party.
