Former President John Dramani Mahama has visited the Police Headquarters to solidarize with Deputy General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress,(NDC) Koku Anyidoho.
He was accompanied by the former Chief of Staff Julius Debrah and other high ups in the NDC party.
Ex President Mahama was at the premises for some few minutes and left after engaging authorities at the police headquarters.
Mr Anyidoho was arrested by the Police Tuesday and charged with treason after he declared that there will be civil coup to oust President Akufo Addo.
The former Director of Communications at the Presidency during the late President Mills’ regime in an interview with Happy FM Monday, served notice the Akufo-Addo administration is likely to be overthrown similar to a coup d’état witnessed in 1972 against his father.
“Somebody should tell Nana Akufo Addo that history has a very interesting way of repeating itself. On the 13th of January 1972, a certain Col. Ignatius Kutu Acheampong led an insurrection movement that removed the Progress Party in power. Busia was the Prime Minister, Akufo Addo’s father was the Ceremonial President. Somebody should tell Akufo Addo that history has a way of repeating itself, there will be a civil revolt, there’ll be a people movement. When President Mahama was in power, Let My Vote Count Alliance and OccupyGhana didn’t they say they’ll unsettle the government?
“There’ll be a civilian coup d’etate , there’ll be a social revolution. We’re starting on Wednesday, Akufo Addo will have a headache, he’ll experience stomach upset, he says he was to be President of this country, we’ll make sure he’s fed up at the Presidency.”
Anyidoho spent the night in BNI cells on Tuesday after a search was conducted at his Private residence. He’s yet t be released.
The police in a statement Wednesday urged the public to remain calm as investigations are carried out in the case.
Mr. Mahama had earlier stated that the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) has shot itself in the foot as a party which prides itself in free speech.
“As a party that prides itself in the non-criminalization of speech, with a self-acclaimed human rights activist as President, the arrest of K. Anyidoho with armed men in the middle of a press event is obviously disproportionate,” Mr. Mahama posted on his Facebook wall.
He added: “Moreso, the high-handed police response to innocent citizens waiting at the CID HQ is condemnable.”
