The Chairman of the Governing Council at the University of Education, Winneba (UEW), Professor Nicholas Abakah has justified the appointment of Rev. Father Prof. Afful -Broni as the acting Vice chancellor of the university.
Speaking at the University’s 2nd Session of its 22nd congregation at Winneba, he explained that the appointment of the acting VC is apt, especially in these turbulent times the University is faced with.
“The University Governing Council at its Emergency meeting of 22nd February, 2018, deemed it expedient and as a matter of urgency, appoint Rev. Father Prof. Afful-Broni as the acting Vice Chancellor until either the restrained substantive Vice Chancellor is reinstated or a new Vice Chancellor is appointed.”
The High Court in Winneba in July last year ordered the Vice Chancellor, Professor Mawutor Avoke and the School’s Finance Officer to both step aside until the final determination of a case brought against the two.
The Court’s order came amidst mass action by the University of Education, Winneba branch of the University Teachers Association (UTAG) who embarked on a strike to demonstrate their displeasure in that decision.
However, Professor Nicholas Abakah assured that the governing council is determined to make the University stronger notwithstanding what he calls the needless legal tussles.
